Ursodiol (ursodeoxycholic acid), a naturally occurring bile acid found in small quantities in normal human bile and in the biles of certain other mammals. In small animals, it is used as adjunctive therapy for the medical management of cholesterol-containing gallstones and/or in patients with chronic liver disease, particularly where cholestasis (bile toxicity) plays an important role. It is used as a long term treatment.
